This TED talk by Chris Anderson talks about how the internet, and in particular web video platforms such as YouTube, are driving what he calls Crowd Accelerated Innovation.
Put simply, the internet is creating cycles of improvement. Using dancers as one example, Anderson notes how they are constantly challenging each other to get better by submitting videos of themselves online. As we’re able to quickly see the best, we can emulate it and improve and/or better it and a result we are seeing an evolution, in this case of dance, as everyone’s having to “step their game up”.
Cool examples of this ongoing cycle of creativity are the stream of self-made videos that hit YouTube incredibly soon after the release of The Social Network trailer. We quickly had well produced YouTube, Twitter and eBay parody trailers. As Anderson suggests, people are finding out new ways to communicate and respond to one another and it’s no longer one to many, speaker to audience. The future focus is on many to many, crowd sourcing and contribution, all of which can be done with serious speed and growing creativity.
